... the mediums and psychics who aren't outright frauds, are actually just extremely perceptive and have a gift for picking up unconscious signals that most people are ignorant of? They interpret this as psychic because perhaps a family member said they were, or because of other beliefs, but in fact they just notice things more. I think this is the more likely explanation. What do you think?

OK I've had a re-revelation (a revelation that I had a while ago and forgot about until an interesting conversation tonight).
Tonight, I discovered a fellow synaesthete. Synaesthesia by the way is a condition where people see names, words, letters and numbers as colours. I thought everyone did this until very recently. Anyway, that's not the point.
My friend Amelia asked me what colour her name was and I said it was dark pink with black. She said "wow, my hair used to be dark pink and black" (she's been blonde ever since i've known her).. so it got me thinking. Then Bekki (the fellow synaesthete) said "it's like a feeling you get".. which got me thinking even more.
Maybe psychics have some kind of synaesthesia (along with what I said in the post above)! This is my great theory. There are, afterall, different kinds of synaesthesia (some people taste words or see words as shapes).
Maybe psychics get feelings from other kinds of triggers and that's how they come up with information. Hmmmm! It's late, I'm going to bed. Bye.

My mum sees each day of the week as a different colour, which i believe is synaesthesic....if thats the right way to explain it!

Yeah sounds like it! I asked a friend what colour her wednesday was and she asked what I meant, so I said you know, like your name is light blue, and she said "how do you know?" That's when I realised that it wasn't normal. Ha!

Do you know what's tragic about it being 2006 now? The worst two numbers to be together are 2 and 6 because red really clashes with turquoise, so 2006 looks horrible. Next year it'll be red and lime green which is also gross, which means there's isn't a nice year until 2008.
I may have gone off on a little tangent but I still stick to my ponderings about mediums. It just happens to be a not-very-well-thought-out idea.
Hehehehe.

I have often wondered if mediums just had a way of reading a persons mind but then they come out with stuff that even we cant remember or dont even no about other members of the family so theres got to be more to it hasnt there . . . .

Well that is one of the theories in parapsychology. On this account, the problem of forgotten memories wouldn't be a problem, because you could say that the information is at least stored somewhere in the brain even if it is difficult to access, and if the information is there then the medium could pick up on it.
Not sure I'm convinced by this, but I'd be more inclined to believe this sort of thing over and above talking to the dead if I had to choose one of the two.
All very interesting.

I just thought of something else with regards to synaesthesia. A lot of sensitives claim to be able to see people's auras - bands of colour around a person that change as their mood changes.
It's entirely possible that the unconscious or even conscious signals given off by a person may trigger the response that the psychic gets - the response being a colour attached to the emotion they're seeing.
Very plausible I think. Any thoughts?

A quick google came up with this: "A popular notion is that some people have a magical ability to detect the hidden emotions of others by seeing a colourful 'aura' or energy field that they give off. Our study suggests a different interpretation. These colours do not reflect hidden energies being given off by other people, rather they are created entirely in the brain of the beholder." In the study, Dr Ward of UCL's Psychology Department documented a woman known as GW who could see colours like purple and blue in response to people she knew or their names when read to her. Words triggered a colour which spread across her whole field of vision, whilst people themselves appeared to have coloured 'auras' projected around them. For example, "James" triggered pink, "Thomas" black and "Hannah" blue. Synaesthesia is a condition found in 1 in 2000 people in which stimulation of one sense produces a response in one or more of the other senses. "Rather than assuming that people give off auras or energy fields that can only be detected by rigged cameras or trained seers, we need only assume that the phenomenon of synaesthesia is taking place."
