It is said that the magnificent gothic library of the National Trust Hall of Felbrigg (which was designed by James Paine) is haunted. The ghost is that of William Windham the second, the Windhams having occupied the house for over 200 years.
William Windham the second inherited the estate in 1749 and it was he who began the library, being an avid collector of books.
Unfortunately, it was his love of books that caused his death in 1810. While staying at a friend’s house in London a fire broke out and William burned to death whilst trying to rescue some of his friend’s precious books.
Now it is said that when a particular combination of books are set on the library table at Felbrigg, William will appear and browse through the books. It may be that he is checking that his legacy is still intact for future generations of book lovers.
